What is the difference between lift check valve, swing check valve and butterfly check valve?

Lift-type Check Valve: A check valve where the valve disc slides along the vertical centerline of the valve body. Lift-type check valves can only be installed on horizontal pipelines. For high-pressure small-diameter check valves, the valve disc can be spherical. The shape of the lift-type check valve body is the same as that of a globe valve (can be used interchangeably with a globe valve), hence it has a higher fluid resistance coefficient. Its structure is similar to a globe valve, with the valve body and valve disc identical to those of a globe valve. The upper part of the valve disc and the lower part of the valve cover are machined with guide sleeves. The valve disc's guide sleeve can freely lift and lower within the valve bonnet's guide sleeve. When the medium flows in the forward direction, the valve disc opens under the thrust of the medium. When the medium stops flowing, the valve disc falls freely by gravity onto the valve seat, preventing backflow of the medium. In a straight-through lift check valve, the inlet and outlet passages of the medium are perpendicular to the valve seat passage direction. In a vertical lift check valve, the inlet and outlet passages of the medium are aligned with the valve seat passage direction, resulting in lower flow resistance compared to the straight-through type.

Swing Check Valve: The disc of a swing check valve is disc-shaped and rotates around the axis of the valve seat passage. The internal passage of the valve forms a streamlined shape, resulting in lower flow resistance compared to lift-type check valves. It is suitable for large-diameter applications with low flow velocity and stable flow conditions, but not suitable for pulsating flows. Its sealing performance is inferior to lift-type check valves. Swing check valves are classified into single-disc, double-disc, and multiple-segment types, primarily categorized by valve size, aiming to reduce hydraulic shock when the medium stops or flows reversely.

Butterfly Check Valve: The butterfly check valve is structurally similar to a butterfly valve, with the main distinction being that a butterfly valve, used as an isolation valve, requires external force to operate, whereas a butterfly check valve is automatic and does not need an actuating mechanism. When the medium stops flowing or flows reversely, the disc rotates to the seat due to its own weight and the reverse flow of the medium. This type of check valve can be used on both horizontal and vertical pipes, typically installed in a wafer-type configuration. Under the pressure of the fluid, the two disc plates rotate around the pivot pin, overcoming spring force, and when open, they resemble a ">" shape. Inlet and outlet pipes of the valve require some straight pipe sections because the disc needs sufficient rotational space.
